Bicentennial Babies

Three new Franklin County babies share a birthday with the county.

The Franklin County Bicentennial Commission recently recognized the birth of three babies on the 200th anniversary of the founding of Franklin County. Born in Franklin County on March 11, 2008, these three “Bicentennial Babies” are each the beneficiaries of a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, presented by the Bicentennial Commission.

Joni Theresa Willis was born to Mary Jo and Tony Willis of Ft. Covington. Joni weighed 5 lb 10 1/4 oz and measured 20 inches.

Xaria Layne Bonesteel was born to parents Scott and Crystal Bonesteel of Malone. Xaria weighed 7 lb 7 1/2 oz and measured 20 inches. She joins siblings Emerald and Drake at home.

Alison Mackenzie Richer was born to parents Jessica Richer and Joshua Morse of Tupper Lake. Alison weighed 7 lb 9oz and measured 21 inches.

“Congratulations to the families of these ‘Bicentennial Babies,’” says Bicentennial Commission Chairperson Wanda Murtagh. ”We hope they will help us celebrate the 250th anniversary in 50 years.”

The Franklin County Bicentennial was celebrated March 11, 2008 with a Founder’s Day Ceremony at the County Courthouse in Malone. The ceremony featured County Legislators and elected officials in historic costumes and the re-creation of an early meeting of the County Board of Supervisors, as the Legislature was then known. Following the ceremony, attendees celebrated with a cake featuring the Bicentennial logo, provided by the Franklin-Essex-Hamilton BOCES Culinary Arts program in Malone.

Bicentennial Day will be celebrated June 14, 2008 at the Franklin County Fairgrounds. The day will begin with a parade along Main St. in Malone at 11pm and conclude with fireworks at dusk. All events at the fairgrounds, including concerts, children’s games and activities, tug-of-war contest, Flag Day ceremony, and historical re-enactor’s camps, will be free of charge and open to the public.
